Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

Posted on: April 18, 2008 7:20 am

Since the draft is a week away, I thought it would be nice to show my list of the biggest draft busts in NFL history. Feel free to comment and portray your own list if you like. Here's my countdown:

  1. Ryan Leaf, QB, Washington State
  2. Heath Shuler, QB, Tennessee
  3. Lawrence Phillips, RB, Nebraska
  4. Art Schlicter, QB, Ohio State
  5. Charles Rogers, WR, Michigan State
  6. Keith McCants, LB, Alabama
  7. Tim Couch, QB, Kentucky
  8. Akili Smith, QB, Oregon
  9. Brian Bosworth, LB, Oklahoma
  10. Tony Mandarich, OT, Michigan State
  11. Johnny Jones, WR, Texas
  12. Jerry Tage, QB, Nebraska
  13. Joe Profit, RB, Northeast Louisiana
  14. Bo Matthews, RB, Colorado
  15. Jim Druckenmiller, QB, Virginia Tech
  16. Andre Ware, QB, Houston
  17. Reggie Rogers, DE, Washington
  18. Huey Richardson, DE, Florida
  19. Mike Junkin, LB, Duke
  20. Derek Brown, TE, Notre Dame (Sorry, just had to put him on here for good and bad reasons, personally)
Well, here's the list. Enjoy!

Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

Nice list collegegrl. There are 8 QBs on the list which says to me maybe drafting a QB with your number one pick is very risky. QBs usually take longer to develop and it is harder to tell how they will do at the Pro level. But if you need one, it is hard to win the SuperBowl without a good QB. Ask the Bears.

Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

You do all the work, and the community critiques.  Good deal (for us  hehe).  A list like this is hard to do because all of the players are easy to forget.

Another running back worthy of the list is Charles White drafted by the Browns with the 27th pick in the first round in 1980.  A hiesman trophey winner while at USC, he floundered in his first four years with the Browns only collecting 942 yards with a meager 3.4 yards per carry and 11 TD's for all four years.   He later admitted to a cocaine addiction during this portion of his career

He then played three years for the LA Rams.  Although he had a probowl year in his final year as a pro in 1987 with 1,387 yards and 11 TD's, it was too little too late to salvage a miserable NFL career.

What's your major collegegrl?
